The first 2 days were a muddy mess. On the first day, I accidentally dropped the mouthpiece from Nolan's water bladder down a small cliff. On the second, I fell trying to take off my bag. On the third day, I flopped down on a boulder exhausted, laying with my bag still strapped on my back while on top of it. I tried pathetically rocking myself up but kept rolling back down like a turtle trying roll off it's shell onto it's legs. Nolan, taking pity on me, grabbed the front strap of my bag to help pull me up, snapping it off the bag. We were finally able to snap it back on using a knife to jam the piece back together. That night I had nightmares about all of our down gear and clothes got wet and about being bitten by swarms of mosquitos. Nolan woke up to me frantically pulling my bag into our tent. He reassured me enough to lay back down, but I spent a lot of the night itching with paranoia. Then, we made it to Mount Laguna. Oh sweet glorious coin-op showers! We stomped on our clothes while showering to wash them and having clean underwear was incredible! At a shop we got soda and a Twix bar, picked up our package, and hiked to the closest camp spot. Today we tried to make some good mileage. A lot of people around us have been throwing down 20 mile days from the very start, but we've been slow pokes. We hiked 18 miles, and we're sore. I don't know how these awesome hikers do it everyday! The last 3 days have been hot and sunny; we're both sunburnt. We smell terrible and staying clean is impossible, but we have each other, gorgeous views, and snacks. Snacks make most things happier.
Cheers!
Oh alissa you're such a goof ball. Nolan I dont know if I have expressed enough how happy I am that alissa found you. You're a rock for her and a best friend. Together you two can scale mountains and achieve greatness. I am honored to have you as a son! You two be safe and know I love you.
